A 19-year-old woman, Suchitra Bagti, was killed in a violent attack in the Saluka Canal area of Birbhum on Tuesday night. The incident occurred around 8:30 PM when Bagti and her companion, 25-year-old Sandeep Das, were traveling on a motorcycle from Mohammad Bazar Seconda towards Hinglo. As they crossed the Saluka Canal area, a group of assailants attacked them. The attackers used a sharp weapon to strike Bagti, leaving her severely injured. She died shortly after the assault while still at the scene.
Sandeep Das, who was with Bagti, was also injured during the attack but survived. He was immediately transported to Suri District Hospital for treatment. The police confirmed that Das’s injuries are non-life-threatening. Both victims are residents of Mohammad Bazar—Bagti is from Sekendra village, and Das is from Hinglo. Upon receiving the report of the attack, the police from Mohammad Bazar station reached the location, recovered the body, and sent it for postmortem.
The police investigation is focused on identifying the attackers and determining the motive behind the assault. Authorities are currently reviewing CCTV footage from the area and conducting door-to-door inquiries. The incident has caused distress in the local community, and police are actively pursuing all leads. The motive for the attack remains unclear, but investigations are continuing.
